Picton – Christchurch Today we take a five hour journey south from Picton to Christchurch via the Coastal Pacific Train. The train, which departed at 1:00 pm, looked new with big roomy seats, TV and earphones (for commentary throughout the trip).

Out of bed at 5.30 am this morning to catch the InterIslander Ferry from Wellington across the Cook Strait to the South Island. The terminal was quiet at first but soon filled with backpackers who outnumbered the other tourists by about fifty to one.
