Out of bed at 5.30 am this morning to catch the InterIslander Ferry from Wellington across the Cook Strait to the South Island. The terminal was quiet at first but soon filled with backpackers who outnumbered the other tourists by about fifty to one.
The Kiwi accent enveloped us like a shroud as we boarded the Jetstar plane in Brisbane, and didn’t let up for sixteen days. The Leader of the Opposition (the missus) and I were flying out for a holiday in New Zealand.
